A popular choice among architects, designers, and homeowners, corbels can be made from wood, plaster, urethane, and other materials. Corbels can be used to support kitchen cabinets, between window frames, and around islands. The possibilities are endless with corbels.

For a kitchen island, corbels are extremely useful, as they can support the structure, and they are best used between counters so both sides are equally supported. It is essential that all corbels are at least half of the depth of the overhang or ¾ inch. This will give you better results.

Corbels give depth and character to your shelves. Whether you paint them unfinished or stain them if they come prefinished, a corbel must account for 70 percent of the overall depth of the shelf.

If you want to add an extra decorative touch to your kitchen, go with mouldings and carvings that match the wood. Their depth will make them a focal point of your decor. If you want a more casual look, you can simply paint or stain them.
